Capoluogo della Provenza e importante porto sul Mediterraneo, Marsiglia è la seconda città francese per grandezza e numero di abitanti. Non avevo mai pensato di visitarla e quando, a sorpresa, mi è stato regalato questo viaggio, sinceramente non nutrivo grandi aspettative. E invece, mi sono dovuta ricredere.
Multietnica e anticonformista, Marsiglia affascina e conquista con i suoi odori, profumi, rumori, sapori e con la sua storia.
Capital of Provence and important seaport on the Mediterranean Sea, Marseille is the second largest French city in terms of size and population. I had never thought of visiting it and when, surprisingly, I was given this trip, I honestly didn’t have high expectations. Instead, I had to change my mind.
Multi-ethnic and nonconformist, Marseille fascinates and conquers with its smells, perfumes, noises, flavors and with its history.
Marsiglia City Pass
Solitamente non acquisto le city card, perché a conti fatti non mi convengono. In questo caso però, è stato diverso. Il giorno prima della mia partenza ho comprato online il Marsiglia City Pass, usufruendo di un consistente sconto che avevo trovato navigando su internet. Appena giunta in città, mi sono recata all’ufficio del turismo e ho ritirato la card.
Grazie al Marsiglia City Pass ho visitato gratuitamente i musei più importanti della città e ho avuto libero accesso ai trasporti pubblici (metro, bus e tram). Tra le attività incluse nel City Pass, da non perdere assolutamente il giro sul trenino panoramico che, partendo dal Vieux Port, vi accompagna fino alla chiesa di Notre Dame de la Garde, in un percorso che costeggia lo splendido lungomare marsigliese per poi inerpicarsi su una ripida salita.
Non potete lasciare Marsiglia senza portarvi l’omonimo sapone. Per avere una profumatissima saponetta in omaggio,

Marseille City Pass
I don’t usually buy city cards. However, this time was different. The day before my departure I bought the Marseille City Pass online, taking advantage of a substantial discount that I had found by surfing the internet. As soon as I arrived in the city, I went to the tourism office for collecting the card.
Thanks to the Marseille City Pass I visited the most important museums of the city for free and I had free access to public transport (metro, bus and tram). Among the activities included in the City Pass, do not miss the ride on the panoramic train that, starting from the Vieux Port, accompanies you to the church of Notre Dame de la Garde, on a path that runs along the splendid Marseille promenade and then climbs on a steep climb.
You cannot leave Marseille without bringing the homonymous soap. To have a fragrant free soap,
go to “Les savons de Saint Victor” and show your card.
Alloggiare al Vieux Port
Cuore pulsante di Marsiglia, il Porto Vecchio è il luogo ideale in cui alloggiare e cominciare l’esplorazione della città. Circondato da edifici storici, ricco di caffè e ristoranti, il Vieux Port è oggi usato come ormeggio di barche da pesca e imbarcazioni da diporto.
Godetevi una romantica passeggiata lungo il Vecchio Porto, alla luce del tramonto, lasciandovi scompigliare i capelli dalla brezza marina e assaporando i rumori della città focea: il garrire dei gabbiani, le voci dei marinai, lo sciabordio delle onde.
Staying at Vieux Port
The beating heart of Marseille, the Old Port is the ideal place to stay and start exploring the city. Surrounded by historic buildings, full of cafes and restaurants, the Vieux Port is now used as a mooring for fishing boats and pleasure boats.
Enjoy a romantic walk along the Old Port, in the light of the sunset, letting your hair ruffle from the sea breeze and savoring the noises of the Phocean city: the gurgling of seagulls, the voices of sailors, the lapping of the waves.
Basilica di Notre-Dame de la Garde
Posta sulla sommità di una collina, a circa 150 metri dal mare, questa maestosa basilica domina la città offrendo una suggestiva vista panoramica su Marsiglia. Definita la “Bonne Mère”, ha uno stile romanico-bizantino con mosaici e pietre policrome. In cima al campanile spicca la gigantesca statua dorata della Madonna con il Bambino. All’interno della Basilica, alzando lo sguardo, si possono ammirare dei modelli di navi appesi al soffitto: si tratta degli ex-voto dei marinai sopravvissuti ai naufragi grazie alla Vergine Maria.
Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde
Located on the top of a hill, about 150 meters from the sea, this majestic basilica dominates the city offering a suggestive panoramic view of Marseille. Called the “Bonne Mère”, it has a Romanesque-Byzantine style with mosaics and polychrome stones. At the top of the bell tower stands the giant golden statue of the Madonna and Child. Inside the Basilica, looking up, you can admire some models of ships hanging from the ceiling: these are the ex-votos of the sailors who survived the shipwrecks thanks to the Virgin Mary.
Le Panier
Situato nella zona del Vieux Port, il Panier è il quartiere più antico di Marsiglia. Un tempo malfamato e frequentato da marinai e prostitute, oggi ospita caffè, negozi di antiquariato e laboratori d’arte. Addentratevi tra le sue stradine intricate, lasciandovi affascinare dall’atmosfera decadente e autentica di questo luogo. E se siete appassionati di street-art, non potete proprio perdervelo: i murales del Panier v’incanteranno.
Le Panier
Located in the Vieux Port area, the Panier is the oldest district in Marseille. Once infamous and frequented by sailors and prostitutes, today it houses cafes, antique shops and art workshops. Delve into its intricate streets, leaving you fascinated by the decadent and authentic atmosphere of this place. And if you are passionate about street-art, you can’t really miss it: the murals of the Panier will enchant you.
La Vieille Charité
Nel cuore del Panier sorge la Vieille Charité, un vecchio ospizio ristrutturato e trasformato in uno dei maggiori poli culturali di Marsiglia. Lo splendido cortile, circondato da maestosi portici, offre al visitatore momenti di pace e di relax.

In the heart of the Panier stands the Vieille Charité, an old hospice renovated and transformed into one of the major cultural centers of Marseille. The splendid courtyard surrounded by majestic arcades offers the visitor moments of peace and relaxation.
Cattedrale di Santa Maria Maggiore
Come la Basilica, anche la cattedrale di Santa Maria Maggiore (alle cui spalle si trova il quartiere Panier) mescola uno stile romanico con uno stile bizantino. Eretta alla fine del sec. XIX, merita senz’altro una visita.
Santa Maria Maggiore Cathedral
Like the Basilica, the cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore (behind which the Panier district is located) also mixes a Romanesque style with a Byzantine style. Erected at the end of the XIX century, certainly worth a visit.
Palazzo Longchamp
Inaugurato nel 1869 per celebrare la costruzione dell’acquedotto che portava l’acqua dalla Durance fino a Marsiglia, questo monumentale edificio è oggi sede di due importanti musei: il Museo delle Belle Arti e il Museo di Storia Naturale. Quest’ultimo mi è piaciuto particolarmente e se avete dei bambini, dovete portarceli… lo adoreranno! Da non perdere la grandiosa fontana al centro del colonnato e i giardini del palazzo che un tempo ospitavano uno zoo.
Longchamp Palace
Inaugurated in 1869 to celebrate the construction of the aqueduct that brought water from the Durance to Marseille, this monumental building is now home to two important museums: the Museum of Fine Arts and the Natural History Museum.
I particularly liked the latter and if you have children, you must bring them … they will love it! Do not miss the palace gardens (which once housed a zoo) and the grandiose fountain in the center of the colonnade.
Isole del Frioul
Amo la letteratura francese e mi sarebbe davvero piaciuto visitare il castello d’If, una fortezza-prigione divenuta famosa grazie al celebre romanzo “Il Conte di Montecristo” di Alexandre Dumas. Poiché è stata costruita su un isolotto al centro del golfo marsigliese, l’attracco con le barche è possibile solo in caso di mare calmo… e sfortunatamente, durante il mio soggiorno a Marsiglia, il vento è stato davvero troppo forte.
Ho quindi “ripiegato” sulle isole del Frioul e ne sono rimasta ammaliata! Habitat di uccelli marini e piante rare, queste isole sono delle incredibili riserve naturali (se andate in estate, non dimenticate di portare con voi il costume).
Frioul islands
I love French literature and I would have really liked to visit the If Castle, a fortress-prison became famous thanks to the novel “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas. Since it was built on an islet in the center of the Marseille gulf, docking with boats is only possible in case of calm sea … and unfortunately, during my stay in Marseille, the wind was really too strong.
So I “folded” on the islands of Frioul and I was enchanted! Habitat of seabirds and rare plants, these islands are incredible natural reserves (if you go in summer, don’t forget to bring your swimsuit with you).
Castello Borély
Circondato da un lussureggiante parco di 17 ettari, il castello Borély è il luogo ideale per gli appassionati della cultura provenzale. Attraverso l’esposizione di elementi decorativi e oggetti della vita quotidiana, il visitatore viene condotto alla scoperta dello stile tipico di questa regione francese.
Concedetevi una sosta nel parco. Qui i marsigliesi vengono a correre e a rilassarsi, dopo una giornata di lavoro.
Borély Castle
Surrounded by a lush 17-hectare park, Borély Castle is the ideal place for fans of Provencal culture. Through the display of decorative elements and objects of daily life, the visitor is led to the discovery of the typical style of this French region.
Take a break in the park. Here the people of Marseille come to run and relax after a day of work.
Cucina marsigliese
A Marsiglia il pesce è fresco e buonissimo. La specialità tipica (che però non ho assaggiato, preferendo altre pietanze a base di pesce) è la bouillabaisse, una zuppa di pesce un tempo considerata un piatto povero, perché veniva preparata col pescato meno pregiato. Se desiderate assaggiarla, vi consiglio di cercare delle piccole trattorie meno turistiche rispetto ai ristoranti sul Vecchio Porto. Da non perdere le crêpe… semplicemente deliziose!
Marseille cuisine
In Marseille, fish is fresh and delicious. The typical specialty (which I have not tasted, preferring other fish dishes) is bouillabaisse, a fish soup once considered a poor dish, because it was prepared with less valuable fish. If you want to taste it, I suggest you to look for small, trattorias less touristy than the restaurants on the Old Port. Do not miss the crêpes … simply delicious!
