Summer is ending and a year goes by …
… There are no more umbrellas on the beach!

That is how a famous song goes, to remind us that another summer is coming to an end, to give space to a new, cold – hopefully – season.

If most of you have already filed away the hot months spent at the beach and closed swimsuits and flip-flops in a drawer, I think we can turn the page and, why not, plan the next trips to discover many new fantastic places.

Bruxelles

Don’t tell me it’s too early, because if you are incurable travelers like me, you will know very well that it is always the right time to pack your bags and leave!

Are you looking for destinations for next winter? I can only suggest one of the most beautiful European capitals to visit during the cold months: Brussels.

Last January, Nicola and I spent 5 wonderful days discovering a city that we never imagined could steal our hearts so much. Also thanks to the magical Christmas atmosphere that hovered in the air and in the streets of the city center.

Dove alloggiare

Where to stay

To visit better the Belgian capital, we stayed in two different areas, guests of the NH hotel chain.

Nhow Brussels Bloom

The first hotel is the Nhow Brussels Bloom, about 15 minutes walk from the famous Grand-Place, located in the lively Botanique district and surrounded by parks, concert venues and art galleries.

Once known as NH Brussels, which regularly welcomed stars such as Michael Jackson and President Ronald Reagan in the 1970s, in June 2021 it opened its doors in this completely new and renewed guise, a different, more youthful and sparkling concept.

It has earned the title of “The Creative Hub: room for art” as it celebrates art in all its forms, starting in the lobby, continuing into the elevators and even corridors.
The 305 rooms are all furnished and decorated as if they were an artist’s studio.

Bruxelles

Gallery Suite

Gallery Suite

Each floor is inspired by a different art form.
The seventh, that of our Gallery Suite, is dedicated to the London artist Jess Thacker.

The entrance is a riot of colors and splashes of paint that immediately draws attention; even the iron and the mini bar do not escape art! The sleeping area is like a blank canvas, where a single painting captures all the interest thanks to the quiet and welcoming environment.
The bathroom was designed to re-propose the dark room of a photographic studio.
Finally, an immense window from which to enjoy the panoramic view of the city and the Atomium, one of Brussels symbols.

Colazione

Breakfast time

The breakfast room is something unique and spectacular! The kingdom of graffiti art!
Inside there is even a Volkswagen van from the ’60s decorated by the Dutch artist Jeej, where you can cook all kinds of pancakes and waffles in total autonomy. My kingdom!
Furthermore, on the walls, scattered here and there around the room, there are “paintings” of donuts.
Across the room, then, a place with lots of candies and marshmallows to choose and enjoy. I really wanted to stay there forever!

This **** hotel is the ideal place where travelers, businessmen and local artists come together to share their creativity and get new inspiration.

NH Collection Brussels Centre

NH Collection Brussels Centre

The second one where we stayed belongs to a completely different kind of hotels.
Located in the city center, the NH Collection Brussels Centre was known as NH Atlanta Brussels.
A few minutes away from the Grand-Place and the main points of interest of the capital, this ***** hotel was built in the 1920s and still retains splendid features of the most chic era of the ‘900, such as the facade in Art déco style and the original staircase.

Recently renovated, elegant and refined, it is the perfect place for a relaxing stay in the heart of the city.

Our suite was located on the 6th floor and had a great view of the city centre.

Royal Palace Bruxelles

Belgium is a Country governed by a federal parliamentary monarchy and as such, it is governed by the king as well as by the prime minister. Definitely the most beautiful and sumptuous building in the whole city, the Royal Palace is still used today by the Royals to house Heads of State and manage royal formalities.

It is located in the historic district of Kunstberg and was built between 1820 and 1934. A magnificent example of neoclassical architecture!

Atomium

Atomium

Easily accessible by metro, in the heart of the Haysel park, stands the Atomium, this huge iron construction designed for the 1958 universal exhibition and destined to be dismantled six months later; however, its popularity and success prevented its demolition, becoming one of the symbols of the Belgian capital.

102 meters high, made up of 7 giant spheres connected to each other by escalators, the Atomium represents an iron crystal enlarged by 165 million times.
Would you ever have the courage to climb to the top and admire the view from above?

The church of Notre Dame du Sablon is a true masterpiece of the Brabantine Gothic style.
It was built from the end of the 14th century and completed a century later.

This bronze statuette symbolizes the independence of spirit of the inhabitants of Brussels.
There are numerous legends that circulate about the origin of the meaning; among all the one according to which a child would have put in place this gesture, to extinguish the fuse of a bomb with which the enemies wanted to set fire to the city.

Bruxelles

The Grand Place

Undoubtedly the heart of the Belgian capital, it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful squares in the world and since 1998 also a UNESCO heritage site.
The town hall and all the houses that once housed the guilds of the city overlook it.

During the Christmas period, this square is dressed up, offering plays of light and music every half hour starting from 5:00 p.m. onwards, during which each building becomes the protagonist of this show!

Bruxelles

Bruxelles City Hall

Located south-east of the Grand Place, here is the Hotel de Ville; the Brabant Gothic architectural masterpiece of the entire square and the oldest building.

Its tower is 96 meters high and has on top a statue of the Archangel Michael located in the center of its facade; the patron saint of the capital fights the devil and protects the people.

I highly recommend a visit inside it that will really leave you speechless!

Until the 19th century, this splendid building also housed the municipal administration; now there are the offices of the administrative officials of the city.

The Hall of Weddings has a fresco on the bottom depicting Justice and Law in the center, two symbolic values recalling the ancient court that once occupied this place. Following the annexation to the French Republic, the municipal authority lost its judicial power; for this reason, the hall was converted into a place for the celebration of civil marriages.

The Gothic Hall is the oldest part, dates back to the 15th century and is now used for concerts thanks to its excellent acoustics and official events.

Piatti tipici

Typical dishes

If you are always curious to try new dishes, here are the typical ones you can taste in Belgium.

Thanks also to its proximity to France, the gastronomy of this Country has dozens and dozens of traditional dishes to try.

Moules et frites

Mussels are absolutely the typical dish of Belgian cuisine. They are served in a cast iron saucepan (usually the same used to cook them), steamed and seasoned with garlic, onion, celery, carrot, pepper and white wine. Always accompanied by fries.
A curious combination but absolutely to try!

Bruxelles

Waterzooi

Waterzooi

Waterzooi is a boiled soup, originally from Flanders, precisely from Ghent, whose basic ingredient was fish, later replaced by chicken, much cheaper.
Its creamy consistency is due to the cooking cream; it is completed with potatoes, leeks, carrots.
The most common accompaniment is with bread.

Carbonade Flamande

Carbonade Flamande

The most elaborate variant of Waterzooi is represented by Carbonade Flamande, a stew of beef or veal cooked in a pan with flour, lard and beer; obviously accompanied by french fries.

Waffle

Waffle

Here, what we commonly know as waffles are called gaufre.
They are square and crunchy, soft inside, usually garnished with chocolate cream, fruit, whipped cream, grains and much more.

They can be found in every corner of the city, in shops or stalls.

Bruxelles

Surroundings to visit

If you like to discover the surroundings of a city, take the train from Brussels station and head towards Flanders.

Bruges, commonly known as the Pearl of Flanders, with its picturesque canals, is very reminiscent of – perhaps – the most famous Amsterdam and Venice. It feels like walking through the alleys of a fairytale village and precisely because of its unmistakable beauty, the historic center has become a Unesco World Heritage Site.

An oil painting where the painter’s hand was generous, surrounded by an oval moat that follows the path of the ancient medieval fortifications that have now disappeared.

If you have little time, my advice it is not to make itineraries but to get lost in the cobbled streets, historic churches, enchanting squares and ancient buildings. Only in this way will you be able to truly appreciate its magic!

Grote Markt

Grote Markt

The Grote Markt is the most famous square in Bruges. Once the commercial center of the country, today it represents its heart and is one of the most visited (but also the most touristic) places. The square is surrounded by characteristic houses with pointed spiers that once housed the headquarters of the guilds, while today they are home to restaurants and cafes.

Right here stands the imposing Beffroi – in Dutch Belfort – the medieval civic tower of the capital city of West Flanders. About 87 meters high, inside it houses a carillon of 47 bells. In the past, it housed a treasury and municipal archives and served as an observation point for spotting fires and other dangers. To climb to the top, however, 366 steps await you!

Unfortunately, the current one is not the first tower to have been erected in 1240,
as a fire destroyed it and the archives were lost.

Bruxelles

Burg Square

Burg Square

Burg Square is the soul of Bruges, one of the oldest places in the country where the River Reie cut an important Roman road in two. Once walled up and equipped with gates, this splendid place steeped in history served as a fortress; today,
it is surrounded by numerous historic buildings including the fourteenth-century Gothic town hall and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
