Lasciata alle nostre spalle la magia di Positano, ci rimettiamo in viaggio per la seconda parte del nostro tour in Costiera Amalfitana e percorrendo il pittoresco tratto di costa più panoramico d’Italia, immersi in un paesaggio mediterraneo di indiscutibile bellezza, raggiungiamo la bellissima cornice di Amalfi, la principale città della Costiera.
La più antica Repubblica Marinara, poco più di tre km², ci incanta dal primo momento con il suo fascino struggente allo sbocco della Valle dei Mulini: eccola lì, Amalfi, che si apre a ventaglio verso il mare e alle sue spalle le rocce dei Monti Lattari.
A differenza di Positano super colorata, ma ugualmente incantevole, Amalfi è un quadro i cui personaggi principali sono le sue case bianche scolpite nella roccia abbracciate le une alle altre che si riflettono nel blu profondo del Tirreno.
Leaving the magic of Positano behind us, we get back on the road for the second part of our tour on the Amalfi Coast and along the picturesque stretch of the most panoramic coast in Italy, immersed in a Mediterranean landscape of indisputable beauty, we reach the beautiful setting of Amalfi, the main city of the Amalfi Coast.
The oldest Maritime Republic, just over three km², enchants us from the first moment with its poignant charm at the mouth of Mulini Valley: there it is, Amalfi, which opens out towards the sea and behind it the rocks of the Lattari Mountains.
Unlike the super colorful but equally enchanting Positano, Amalfi is a painting whose main characters are its white houses carved into the rock hugging each other that are reflected in the deep blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

After a warm welcome from the excellent staff of the NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi, we leave our belongings in the room and head to the La Locanda restaurant, with its splendid and bright terrace, adjacent to the fabulous infinity pool, the ideal place for a nice refreshing lunch.
The warm sun, the scent of salt, the gentle sound of the waves, the sea breeze on the skin. Nothing better.

Tra terrazzamenti coltivati a limoni, bouganville in fiore e un’innumerevole serie di alberi centenari, l’NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi conserva al suo interno straordinarie perle storiche che meritano di essere scoperte.
Nel 1583 il Convento venne affidato ai Frati Cappuccini che restarono, al suo interno, per oltre due secoli e intrapresero un vasto programma di recupero. Nel 1813 fu destinato dall’Arcivescovo di Amalfi a locanda di alcuni privati. Nel 1885, il Convento venne utilizzato per la prima volta come albergo e iniziarono una serie di ampliamenti e trasformazioni. Oggi, dopo un restauro rispettoso della storia, si può ancora respirare l’atmosfera e la pace di un tempo.
L’affascinante Chiostro è un quadriportico risalente al XIII secolo e presenta una struttura architettonica arabo-normanna, si sviluppa frontalmente rispetto all’ingresso della chiesa affacciato totalmente sul mare. Intimo e riservato, è il luogo ideale per un matrimonio da favola.
Accanto al Chiostro, si trova la magnifica Cappella di San Francesco del XII secolo. L’altare maggiore in marmo e il pavimento in cotto con inserti in maiolica adornano con eleganza i suoi interni.

Among terraces planted with lemons, flowering bougainvillea and an innumerable series of centenary trees, the NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi preserves within it extraordinary historical pearls that deserve to be discovered.
In 1583 the Convent was entrusted to the Capuchin Friars who remained inside it for over two centuries and undertook a vast recovery program. In 1813 it was assigned by the Archbishop of Amalfi as an inn for some private individuals. In 1885, the Convent was used for the first time as a hotel and a series of extensions and transformations began. Today, after a restoration respectful of history, you can still breathe the atmosphere and peace of the past.
The charming Cloister is a quadriporticus dating back to the thirteenth century and has an Arab-Norman architectural structure, it develops in front of the church entrance, totally overlooking the sea. Intimate and reserved, it is the ideal place for a fairytale wedding.
Next to the Cloister, there is the magnificent 12th century Chapel of San Francesco. The high altar in marble and the terracotta floor with majolica inserts elegantly adorn its interior.

La Terrazza dei Cappuccini mi ha ammaliata con il suo fascino unico; qui si può fare colazione all’ombra delle bouganville, prendere un aperitivo verso l’imbrunire (vi assicuro che è qualcosa di magico) o cenare all’aperto nelle sere d’estate.
Percorrendo la Passeggiata dei Monaci, un affascinante sentiero in cui perdersi con lo sguardo sul panorama circostante, si giunge all’ Infinity Pool, una meravigliosa piscina a sfioro sul Golfo di Amalfi, un luogo da sogno in cui rilassarsi e prendere il sole.
E proprio mentre eravamo qui in un momento di relax assoluto, ci ha colti di sorpresa un forte acquazzone.
Non ci siamo fatti prendere dallo sconforto e abbiamo atteso che finisse per scattare qualche foto e immortalare un paesaggio surreale: il cielo ha assunto dei colori magnifici e ha reso l’acqua di un intenso verde acqua. Non si riusciva più a capire dove finiva la piscina e dove cominciava il mare.

The Terrazza dei Cappuccini enchanted me with its unique charm; here you can have breakfast in the shade of the bougainvillea, take an aperitif at sunset (it’s magic) or have outdoor dinner on summer evenings.
Walking along the Promenade of the Monks, a fascinating path where you can get lost with your gaze on the surrounding landscape, you reach the Infinity Pool, a wonderful pool on the Gulf of Amalfi, a dream place to relax and sunbathe.
And just as we were here in a moment of absolute relaxation, a heavy downpour took us by surprise.
We didn’t get discouraged and waited for it to end up for taking some photos and immortalizing a surreal landscape: the sky took on magnificent colors and made the water an intense aqua green. It was no longer possible to understand where the pool ended and where the sea began.
Le suite dell’hotel
Durante la nostra permanenza all’NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi, abbiamo avuto il piacere di soggiornare in due diverse tipologie di camere.
I comfort più moderni si mescolano armoniosamente ad una location di altri tempi: i colori tenui ed accoglienti si fondono perfettamente con l’atmosfera storica dell’hotel e con la maestosità della natura circostante.
La Premium con vista diretta sul mare presenta pavimento in terracotta e arredamenti dal design minimal e dallo stile contemporaneo; un’anticamera con angolo scrittoio, guardaroba a vista e minibar, un elegante bagno in marmo con vasca, un grande e comodo letto matrimoniale e di fronte un’ampia finestra. Un’atmosfera calda e confortevole.
La spaziosa Junior Suite con terrazza privata da 25mq è allestita con sedie e tavolino (ottimi per la colazione), ombrellone, lettini prendisole, una splendida Jacuzzi ed una vista da sogno su Amalfi, l’infinito mare azzurro e la Costiera. Non mancano i sofisticati pavimenti in terracotta, uno spazioso bagno in marmo con doccia e vasca, ampio letto matrimoniale, angolo relax con divano e tv, guardaroba a vista e mini bar.

During our stay at the NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi, we had the pleasure of staying in two different types of rooms.
The most modern comforts blend harmoniously with a location from other times: the soft and welcoming colors blend perfectly with the historic atmosphere of the hotel and with the majesty of the surrounding nature.
The Premium with Direct Sea View has terracotta flooring and furnishings with a minimal design and contemporary style; an anteroom with a desk corner, an open wardrobe and a minibar, an elegant marble bathroom with bathtub, a large and comfortable double bed and an amazing window in front of it. A warm and comfortable atmosphere.
The spacious 25sqm Junior Suite with Private Terrace is equipped with chairs and table (excellent for breakfast), sun umbrella, sun loungers, a splendid Jacuzzi and a dream view of Amalfi, the infinite blue sea and the coast. There are also sophisticated terracotta floors, a spacious marble bathroom with shower and bathtub, large double bed, relaxation corner with sofa and TV, open wardrobe and mini bar.
Alla scoperta di Amalfi
L’NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi è davvero il perfetto punto di partenza per scoprire Amalfi e le sue intricate stradine brulicanti di negozietti. Ma questo paese non è solo mare, botteghe e ristoranti. In esso è racchiusa tantissima storia.
Il più celebre monumento di Amalfi è certamente il Duomo in stile arabo-siciliano dedicato a Sant’Andrea, patrono della città. Si accede ad esso tramite l’imponente scalinata che affaccia sulla piazza principale del paese; la prima cosa che risalta all’occhio è senza ombra di dubbio la facciata a mosaici decorati.
Per accedervi, è previsto un biglietto di ingresso di 3 euro che comprende anche la visita al Museo e al Chiostro del Paradiso.
Il nucleo originario del Duomo di Amalfi è da ricercare nella più antica basilica del Crocifisso. L’impianto del Duomo risale alla fine del IX secolo e lo si può facilmente capire quando ci si trova nella navata più grande, mentre quella laterale funge da collegamento con l’altra basilica.
In realtà, si dovrebbe parlare di complesso architettonico, poiché l’edificio è composto da sovrapposizioni e affiancamenti di più chiese e strutture di varie epoche, una cripta inferiore dove sono custodite le reliquie del santo, il campanile e il Chiostro del Paradiso.
Quest’ultimo è stato ordinato dall’arcivescovo Filippo Augustariccio per fungere da cimitero per i nobili. In esso c’erano sei cappelle che appartenevano a nobili famiglie e ne ospitavano i resti. Inoltre, vi sono cinque sarcofagi importanti che hanno resistito allo scorrere del tempo.
Nel chiostro vi sono vari affreschi tra cui quello raffigurante la Crocifissione della scuola giottesca. Al centro del Chiostro del Paradiso, anch’esso in stile arabo, c’è un giardino con palme che molto probabilmente è stato costruito dopo il restauro del 1908.
Nella parte sud della piazza, è collocata la fontana di S. Andrea Apostolo realizzata nel 1760. La sua attuale collocazione risale alla fine del 1800 quando fu trasferita dalla posizione originaria ai piedi della scalinata del Duomo.
Discovering Amalfi
The NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi is truly the perfect starting point to discover Amalfi and its intricate streets teeming with shops. But this town is not just sea, shops and restaurants. It contains a lot of history.
The most famous monument of Amalfi is certainly the Cathedral in Arab-Sicilian style dedicated to Sant’Andrea, patron saint of the city. It is accessed via the imposing staircase that overlooks the main square of the town; the first thing you notice is undoubtedly the decorated mosaic facade.
There is an entrance ticket of 3 euros which also includes a visit to the Museum and the Cloister of Paradise.
The original nucleus of the Amalfi Cathedral is to be found in the oldest basilica of the Crucifix. The structure of the Cathedral dates back to the end of the 9th century and it can be easily understood when you are in the largest nave, while the side one acts as a connection with the other basilica.
In reality, we should speak of an architectural complex, since the building is composed of overlapping and side by side churches and structures from various eras, a lower crypt where the relics of the saint are kept, the bell tower and the Cloister of Paradise.
The Cloister of Paradise was ordered by Archbishop Filippo Augustariccio to serve as a cemetery for the nobles. In it there were six chapels that belonged to noble families and housed their remains. In addition, there are five important sarcophagi that have withstood the passage of time.
In the cloister there are various frescoes including the one depicting the Crucifixion of the Giotto school. At the center of the Cloister of Paradise, also in Arabic style, there is a garden with palm trees that was most likely built after the restoration in 1908.
In the southern part of the square, there is the fountain of S. Andrea Apostolo built in 1760. Its current location dates back to the late 1800s when it was moved from its original position at the foot of the steps of the Cathedral.
Dintorni (Ravello e Villa Rufolo)
Non potevamo assolutamente andare via dalla Costiera senza prima aver visitato Ravello che, dall’alto dei Monti Lattari, domina il paesaggio offrendo panorami di ineguagliabile bellezza. Secondo la tradizione, Ravello fu fondata dai Romani in cerca di un luogo sicuro durante il periodo delle invasioni barbariche.
La cultura ha sempre svolto un ruolo fondamentale nella storia di questo piccolo comune che è stato un importante punto di ritrovo di intellettuali (tra cui il compositore Wagner) e fonte di ispirazione di poeti e scrittori come Giovanni Boccaccio, talmente affascinato da questo splendido luogo da dedicargli una novella del Decameron.
Oggi, Ravello è nota anche come “Città della Musica” per i numerosi eventi musicali che vi si svolgono, tra cui il Ravello Festival che ha sede in uno dei luoghi di maggior interesse del paese: il Giardino di Villa Rufolo.
Villa Rufolo fu edificata in Piazza Duomo nel 1200 dalla famiglia Rufolo, la più importante e potente famiglia di Ravello.
Nell’ Ottocento, la Villa fu venduta al botanico scozzese Francis Neville Reid, il quale la ristrutturò dandole l’aspetto attuale e disegnò personalmente i meravigliosi giardini della Villa che si affacciano sul panorama della Costiera, conosciuti come il “giardino dell’anima“.

Surroundings (Ravello and Villa Rufolo)
We absolutely could not leave the Amalfi Coast without first having visited Ravello which, from the top of the Lattari Mountains, dominates the landscape offering panoramas of incomparable beauty. According to tradition, Ravello was founded by the Romans in search of a safe place during the period of the barbarian invasions.
Culture has always played a fundamental role in the history of this small town which has been an important meeting point for intellectuals (including the composer Wagner) and a source of inspiration for poets and writers such as Giovanni Boccaccio, so fascinated by this splendid place to dedicate a story from the Decameron to it.
Today, Ravello is also known as the “City of Music” for the numerous musical events that take place there, including the Ravello Festival which is based in one of the most interesting places in the town: the Garden of Villa Rufolo.
Villa Rufolo was built in Piazza Duomo in 1200 by the Rufolo family, the most important and powerful family of Ravello.
In the 19th century, the Villa was sold to the Scottish botanist Francis Neville Reid, who restored it to give it its current appearance and personally designed the wonderful gardens of the Villa overlooking the coast, known as the “Garden of the Soul”.
