La seconda parte del nostro viaggio in Salento prosegue e si conclude a Castro, un piccolo borgo salentino più a sud di Otranto, di circa 2300 abitanti. Situato lungo la costa orientale della penisola salentina, il comune è formato dal centro abitato principale di origine medievale situato su un promontorio e dalla parte bassa detta Castro Marina, sorta intorno al porto.
The second part of our journey in Salento continues and ends in Castro, a small Salento village south of Otranto, with about 2300 inhabitants. Located along the eastern coast of the Salento peninsula, the town is formed by the main inhabited center of medieval origin located on a promontory and the lower part known as Castro Marina, built around the port.
Qui, il blu del mare e il verde della vegetazione si uniscono per dare vita ad un paesaggio unico.
La costa si presenta molto frastagliata e ricca di grotte antichissime, alcune visitabili a piedi ed altre solo in barca.
Una tra le più famose è sicuramente la Grotta Zinzulusa.

I primi visitatori descrissero questo posto come invaso di “zinzuli”, che in dialetto salentino vuol dire stracci.
In realtà, non sono nient’altro che formazioni carsiche, in particolare stalattiti, che pendono dal soffitto come fossero, appunto, degli stracci appesi. Da lì in poi si decise, così, che quello sarebbe stato il nome ufficiale della grotta.]

The coast is very jagged and rich in ancient caves, some of which can be visited on foot and others only by boat.
One of the most famous is certainly the Zinzulusa Cave.

The first visitors described this place as invaded by “zinzuli”, which in Salento dialect means rags.
In reality, they are nothing but karst formations, in particular stalactites, which hang from the ceiling as if they were hanging rags. From then on, it was decided that this would be the official name of the cave.]
Sorta durante la civiltà greca, Castro ha visto nei secoli il passaggio di numerosi popoli tra cui romani, longobardi e bizantini. Ne è una testimonianza la Cattedrale di Maria Santissima Annunziata, nella bellissima Piazza della Vittoria.
Nonostante i vari stili che nel tempo ne hanno alterato la struttura, è possibile ancora notare sulla facciata laterale i resti di una basilica bizantina.
Built during the Greek civilization, Castro has seen over the centuries the passage of numerous peoples including Romans, Longobards and Byzantines. Proof of this is the Cathedral of Maria Santissima Annunziata, in the beautiful Piazza della Vittoria.
Despite the various styles that over time have altered the structure, it is still possible to note the remains of a Byzantine basilica on the side façade.

Pochissime stanze, quasi dei mini appartamenti, tutte arredate in un perfetto stile marino.

La nostra camera Superior era una mini suite. Un ambiente unico ma molto spazioso, con letto matrimoniale, divano letto e bagno con doppio lavabo ed una stupenda walking shower.
Inoltre, avevamo uno spaziosissimo patio dove poter fare colazione indisturbati ed un bellissimo terrazzo privato ubicato sul tetto della camera e attrezzato di lettini e gazebo, accessibile dalle scale private adiacenti alla camera.
Very few rooms, almost like mini apartments, all furnished in a perfect marine style.
The soft colors that characterise every room of this splendid building are all the shades of blue, light grey and white.
Our Superior Room was a mini suite. A unique but very spacious space, with double bed, sofa bed and bathroom with double sink and a beautiful walking shower.
Furthermore, we had a very spacious patio where we could have breakfast undisturbed and a beautiful private terrace located on the roof of the room and equipped with sun beds and gazebos, accessible from the private staircases adjacent to the room.
Durante il nostro soggiorno abbiamo avuto l’occasione di cenare nell’esclusivo ristorante à la carte “La Terrazza sul mare” del Marenea Suite Hotel, che gode di una suggestiva vista mare, nel quale abbiamo potuto gustare piatti tipici della cucina salentina cucinati con prodotti a chilometro zero.
During our stay we had the opportunity to dine in the exclusive à la carte restaurant “La Terrazza sul mare” of the Marenea Suite Hotel, with a suggestive sea view, in which we could taste typical dishes of Salento cuisine cooked with products at zero distance.
Un tocco speciale è dato sicuramente dalla splendida piscina all’aperto circondata dal verde dove abbiamo potuto rilassarci e fare tantissimi bagni.
Per chi volesse, inoltre, in reception è prenotabile un posto nella spiaggia di rocce a soli 300 metri dalla struttura. Si tratta di un lido convenzionato attrezzato con pedane in legno, ombrelloni e lettini sul prato e scalette per fare il bagno.
Noi, però, abbiamo preferito girare in lungo e in largo la lingua di costa castrense in cerca di calette meno battute dai turisti per immergerci e tuffarci nella bellissima acqua azzurra del Salento.
Quale parte della Puglia scopriremo la prossima estate?
A special touch is certainly given by the splendid outdoor swimming pool surrounded by greenery where we could relax and swim.
For those who want, moreover, at the reception it is possible to book a place on the rocky beach just 300 meters from the hotel. It is a partner beach equipped with wooden platforms, beach umbrellas and sunbeds on the lawn and ladders for diving.
However, we have preferred to explore the coast of Castro looking for coves less traveled by tourists to dive into the beautiful blue water of Salento.
